The Challenges of Being Self Employed
Everyone who has never done it seems to think that being self employed is the best job in the world. I’m not going to lie. It does have its benefits. But, contrary to popular belief there are plenty of setbacks as well. Being your own boss and employee at the same time has its challenges.
For starters, it is a lot harder to find the motivation to get things done when your work day lacks structure. When you’re working a regular job and you have to be to work at 9AM to punch a time clock, you have to have a pretty strict morning ritual. You get up at the same time every day. You prepare for work the same way. You get dressed at the same time. Every little step in preparation is a ritual that you repeat day after day for years.
Once you become self employed your life begins to lose those years worth of preparation rituals. Now you can show up to work in your underwear if you really want to. Well, at least I can. You don’t necessarily need to get in and out of the shower by 8AM so you’ll make it to work on time. If nobody is going to see you today it is very tempting to not bother doing your hair.
You see, these little things begin to add up over a period of time. After a year or so of working for yourself you may start to struggle to find the motivation to get any substantial amount of work done first thing in the morning. It becomes much easier to put things off that you really should be doing today. If you had a boss monitoring you there is no doubt that you would get that work done. Without the boss it’s not that simple.
There isn’t anyone to share the burdens of certain tasks with either. When you are working at an office with other people, you can bounce ideas off of them and get some other decent input. Now, you’re left all alone to figure everything out for yourself. Believe me it’s not that much fun.
Ask some other people who have been self employed for a while. I bet you they will tell you that sometimes the hardest part of it all is dealing with yourself. It is far more challenging than you think it would be. When you are working a regular 9-5 day job you dream of the opportunity to get into that situation. Once you are there you begin to realize it is not all wine and roses.
