How To Throw A Kentucky Derby Party

We like to do a lot of entertaining as a couple.  We have a many friends that like to get together on occasion to let loose a little bit and get away from the kids for a while.  That gives us plenty of opportunities to throw little parties at our home.  Actually, it’s one of our favorite things to do.

Next weekend we will be hosting a Kentucky Derby party.  I have never been a huge fan of horseracing.  Even though there was a racetrack less than a mile from my home for the last twenty years, I had not even set foot in it until about two years ago.  A friend of ours had talked us into going to a live race just for something different to do.  The racetrack has a nice restaurant with stadium style tiers so that you can dine while watching the races.  As it turns out, it was a lot of fun.

We were big time gamblers too.  I think we were making bets of like five dollars per race.  So, even on the rare occasion that we would win, it really didn’t pay all that much.  But, I admit it was a lot of fun.

Because of that inspiring little trip to the racetrack, we decided two years ago to actually watch the Kentucky Derby.  We picked our favorite horses and our favorite jockeys.  I was stunned at how exciting it was to watch this race even though we didn’t even have any money on the line.  It was unbelievably exciting.  I was hooked.

We ordered a set of Kentucky Derby cocktail glasses that year.  The glasses have all of the previous winning horses’ names engraved on them.  It is pretty darn cool.  Several years before this we learned how to make a Mint Julep cocktail from a real Kentucky Colonel.  Since then we have been hooked on them too.

Because of our new found love of horseracing and our long love for entertaining, we decided to combine the two items into one.  So we are hosting our first ever Kentucky Derby party.  We will be serving Mint Julep cocktails made with fresh mint from the local grocery stores.  We are encouraging the female guests to dress the part as if they would be attending the real Kentucky Derby.  I can’t wait to see what kind of hats they show up wearing.

We are going to be serving a number of different Hors d’oeuvres for the event.  They will be mostly finger food that is clean enough that people won’t mess up their clothing.  We will be doing a little friendly wagering as well.

Usually when we get together for these kinds of things we end up playing Texas Holdem by the end of the night.  We don’t play for big stakes there either.  Usually it’s two dollars per person.  The most we ever bet was something like ten dollars each.

Our friends are a rowdy bunch who likes to drink.  I am sure the party is going to be a good time.  Why not take some of my ideas and plan your own Kentucky Derby Party.
