Redecorating to Add a Little Romance to Your Dining Room

diningroomAlright lades, I’m throwing my two cents in on how to help add a little romance your dining rooms. The dining room is one of my favorite rooms in the house. I know that’s weird, but it’s true. My husband and I spend a lot of time in there. We both work long hours. So, we don’t get all that much time to spend together. We do get to spend a little while together each evening in our dining room enjoying a nice evening meal. We both have similar tastes. We both love to have a nice cozy, dimly lit, more romantic setting to enjoy our dinners by.

One thing we did that really upped the quality of our dining room was to change the wall colors. The walls in our dining room used to be grey. We had these relatively cheap brown colored curtains covering up these two large floor to ceiling windows in there too. We live in a colonial style home which I happen to love. Anyway, the room really wasn’t all that inviting. So we decided to start from scratch.

We completely gutted the room. My husband rented a floor sander and took off the top layer of our hardwood floor. We stained it a dark walnut color and put a polyurethane seal on it. It really wasn’t as bad as it sounds. My husband also replaced the two large windows with vinyl replacement inserts. That side of the house gets all the weather and the old windows that were there were very leaky. The new windows had the grills in them that you see in most colonial homes. They are very sharp.

Then we decided to pain the room a burgundy red color. We painted the trim a bright white. The two colors contrast very well with each other. Then we bought these gorgeous bright white curtains to set off those new windows. We got new hardware for the curtains as well that had a wrought iron look to it.

We replaced our modern ceiling fixture with a brand new classic looking dome that matched the hardware on the curtains. We also installed a dimmer for the light. The room was finished off by hanging various photographs on each wall. We have a huge wedding photo on one wall. There are other large photos on other walls. I think the large photos look better in here then the smaller ones do. We hang the smaller ones in the family room.

We always keep a nice arrangement as a centerpiece on our dining room table. That centerpiece is normally flanked by two candlesticks with tapered candles in them. We really enjoy dinner by candlelight. I would say we eat by candlelight three to four times a week. We also turn on the Seriously Sinatra station on the television in the next room for some pleasant dinner music. When we aren’t listening to that station we will have on either some baroque classical or some other string based easy listening music. I hate to brag but I really think our dinners are very romantic and very magical.
